A rent hike has resulted in landmark Dadeland Mall furniture store arango closing after 50 years.
Known for bringing high-end home furnishings to Miami’s suburbs, arango is set to shut down at Dadeland this Saturday, the Miami Herald reported. Owner and co-founder Judith Arango relocated her store from downtown Miami to the southwestern Miami-Dade County mall just before suburban sprawl took hold. Arango developed a strong niche by selling high-design items at affordable rates.
Arango co-owner Marianne Russell told the Herald the decision to close the store was driven by a rent increase she called “unsustainable.” An emotional farewell reception was held at the store Sunday night.
After closing at Dadeland, the store’s ownership plans to mull a new concept for the company. [Miami Herald] — Eric Kalis
