David Beckham’s top choice for a Major League Soccer stadium is the southwest section of the Biscayne Bay seaport PortMiami.
His group of investors, known as Beckham Brand Limited, has asked Miami-Dade County officials if they would consider a 25,000-seat stadium, a mega-yacht marina and possible waterfront promenade for the 25-acre spot. One of the investors is billionaire Marcelo Claure, who runs global wireless distributor Brightstar.
The two ways to reach the island are via the new Port Tunnel – opening next year – and by car from Port Boulevard along Northeast 6th Street.
Deputy Mayor Chip Iglesias said small businesses leasing office space on the site would likely be displaced if a project were to proceed.
Iglesias and Mayor Carlos Gimenez have been in talks with New York-based development firm HR&A Advisors, which was tapped by Beckham’s group to find a suitable Miami location. [Miami Herald] — Mark Maurer
