Miami Beach voters are set to shape the future course of the city’s convention center during Tuesday’s elections.

The mayoral post and two city commission seats are up for grabs. Voter sentiment on the proposed $1 billion redevelopment of the Miami Beach Convention Center could determine who wins the seats. A referendum to require a supermajority vote of 60 percent to approve the project is also on the ballot.

The South Beach ACE development team was awarded the project in July. Current plans call for an 800-room convention center hotel and 90,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.

Matti Herrera Bower, the city’s mayor, has reached her term limit and is running for a commission seat. She has been a vocal proponent of current development plan. [Miami Herald]Eric Kalis
