Florida homeowner associations face more-stringent oversight

Sen. Alan Hays

Florida homeowner associations are facing additional state scrutiny — and a $4 annual fee for residents — thanks to a new bill.

More than 2.6 million Florida homes are in communities run by homeowner associations – the most were in Palm Beach County, with 1,572 associations — according to the survey by Florida’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

Sen. Alan Hays has said that he is sponsoring the legislation because of the numerous complaints he receives from residents about their associations.

“I would gladly pay $10 or even $20 per year to have some protection,” Wellington homeowner Jacque Dupuis said. “They try to intimidate people who speak out. Things are run like a dictatorship.” [PBP]Christopher Cameron
