A wind farm in Texas

St. Louis-based firm Wind Capital Group has abandoned its proposal to build 124 wind turbines near Palm Beach County’s Belle Glade that were poised to power 60,000 homes in what would have been the first wind farm in Florida.

Environmental groups had protested the plan, arguing its proximity to the Atlantic Flyway would result in the deaths of several birds. But a contractor for the firm told the Palm Beach Post the decision was due to the state’s favoring of natural gas over renewable energy sources at this time.

Two weeks prior to the decision, the state Department of Environmental Protection issued an environmental permit for Wind Capital Group’s project. [Palm Beach Post]Mark Maurer
